I first learnt about The Life You Can Save when I met Peter Singer while working for UNICEF in 2009. The ideas in his book opened my eyes to effective altruism and I’m now excited to be helping advance this movement as part of The Life You Can Save global advisory board.

Our mission is to change the culture of giving in affluent countries while increasing donations to highly impactful nonprofits that reduce suffering and premature death for people living in extreme poverty. We recommend a list of proven charities that offer donors the best 'return on investment'.

At critical moments in time, you can raise the aspirations of other people significantly, especially when they are relatively young, simply by suggesting they do something better or more ambitious than what they might have in mind. It costs you relatively little to do this, but the benefit to them, and to the broader world, may be enormous. This is in fact one of the most valuable things you can do with your time and with your life.

I’ve just moved into a new home (it's awesome, thanks for asking) and it got me thinking about all the people around the world who don’t even have a roof over their heads, let alone a place to call home.

Can you imagine living in a house that’s unsafe? That’s prone to fires and other natural disasters? Can you imagine losing everything in an earthquake? Not only your possessions but your partner, your parents, your friends or even your children, partly because there’s nowhere secure for you to shelter?

For around 41% of Nepal’s population, this their reality. Living in inadequate houses, often poorly built with thatched roofs and straw walls leaves them exposed. Think the first little piggy in the fairytale.

Because I’m no master builder—yet, (I’m imagining I’ll be a late bloomer like Emmet and if you don’t know what I’m talking about go and watch The Lego Movie now, well, after donating of course ;P), I’m fundraising so me and the team I’m travelling with can be supported by local professionals and get access to quality building supplies.

I’m setting myself a fundraising target of $2520 (the cost to build a house in Nepal), which, with your help I’m aiming to smash, but most of all I’m hoping I don’t end up with an embarrassingly low total. Even more important than my pride is the fact that this money will transform the lives of a family in Nepal who've never had a safe or decently built house to call home.

It doesn’t matter how much or how little you’re able to give, even if your contribution is just to share this with your family and friends. On this journey of building homes for people in dire need, every brick counts.

    Thank you!

Brendan (aka soon to be Masterbuilder)
